Multi-Factor Authentication
For individuals/organizations who are looking forward to making their cybersecurity at par with excellence, multi-factor authentication systems are inevitable. In this approach, apart from the primary authentication method (mostly password or pin), another authentication method is also employed to authenticate that only the authorized person is accessing the subjected set of information. There are multiple ways of doing this second authentication, namely push notifications, mobile app code, SMS pin, email pin, and physical token. In push notification, a notification will pop up on the users’ devices asking if this login attempt was initiated from them. Whereas, in SMS pin, e-mail pin, and mobile app code, a security code or pin is sent via the aforementioned medium. The users are then supposed to enter that code on the prompt window. The physical token is a rather old method but it is still being used. Here a small device generates unique codes in the same way as the above-mentioned methods. The only downside is that the users are supposed to keep track of other devices. In a nutshell, all of these methods may differ in their scope of operation, but they all serve the same purpose, i.e., making cyber defense strong.
